SMS are a quick and convenient way to communicate with more or one person.  Here are some helpful reminders on SMS etiquette that are often over-looked.

·        If you are talking with someone it is rude to compose, read or respond to an SMS.

·        An SMS is an informal method of communication and shouldn’t be used for important tasks; leave those for phone calls, e-mails and face-to-face conversations.

o       As they are informal, remember that you are texting when it is convenient for you and that the recipient(s) will likely respond when it is convenient for them to respond.  If it is important and you don't get a response then a call may be in order.

·        Not everyone knows how to text or can even receive SMS.  Before you send it is a good idea to make sure they have that feature on their plan and they know how to use it.  This will prevent you from getting frustrated if the recipient doesn’t respond and they will not be shocked with additional charges on their bill.

·        Just like any other written communication it can be difficult for the recipient to discern tone.

·        Remember your audience, your friends may be up-to-date on the latest slang but your grandmother won't.
